Specimen Collection Procedure

Services provided to Surgery, Endoscopy, Diagnostic Imaging Centers and Physician's Offices

Specimen Collection:

Surgical Pathology

    • Frozen sections: Rotated or as needed schedule. STAT service is also available, call to make arrangements.
    • Bone marrow: Submit as routine. Collect one yellow and one green top tube for additional studies if needed and submit peripheral smear and blood count if available. Will be reviewed by a hematopathologist.
    • Breast tumor markers: Performed in house on formalin fixed tissue specimens (fresh and frozen tissues are obsolete) and reported routinely unless specified as 'Do not perform'.
    • Routine biopsies: Submit in formalin containers provided and label as indicated. Dermatopathologists are available for review.
    • Lymph node: Submit as routine. Will be reviewed by a hematopathologist.
    • Muscle biopsy processing: Call to schedule, STAT service is available.
    • Crystal Identification in fluids: Submit in a purple-top vacutainer.
    • On site Gram's Stain interpretation: Call to schedule or for STAT service.

GYN Cytology

    • Pap Smears: ThinkPrep, SurePath, or conventional Pap tests.
    • Cytopathologist is available for review of specimens.

 

Non-GYN Cytology

    • No smears needed, use squirt and rinse needle in the cytology fixative provided. If none are available call for STAT pick up.
    • Needle Aspiration: Only thyroid aspirations require smears, the rest submit in the cytology fixative provided and rinse needle well.
    • Adequacy check for Needle Aspiration: Call to schedule or for STAT.
    • Tzanck smears: Submit air-dried smears and will be called as STAT if positive.
    • USFNA

Molecular

    • Chlamydia/GC/HPV testing: Can be done from the same vial of ThinPrep as for cytology.
    • Cytogenetics for POC: Collect in RPMI media provided to the center. If none are available, collect in sterile saline and call for a STAT pick up.

Other Services

  • Microbiology Cultures: Submit as a routine and indicate if Gram stain result needs to be called to provided telephone number.
  • Second Opinion: Send as routine or DPS can arrange a pick up, we will deliver.

 

Ordering:

Requisition Forms: Can use same form for all requests. Clinical lab & specialty forms (GI, Urology and IHC) are available if preferred.

Specimen Transport: Can be sent by courier (within our target area) or by Priority Overnight mail using mailers provided and paid for by Doctors Pathology Services. All specimens should be submitted in DPS provided specimen bags. Barcoded requisition and specimen containers ensure every specimen is transported and processed accurately.

Site of testing: All Pathology & Cytology services are performed at our lab in Dover, Delaware; Clinical Lab work is performed overnight by our affiliate lab.

Turn around time: Routine -24 hours including weekends for all routine work that does not require additional stains, cultures or expert opinion. All STAT and critical values will be called to the designated provider the morning of the next day. For weekends please provide a phone number.

Reports: All providers and office staff can access patient reports via the internet with the passwords provided. Hard copies can be faxed, printed on DPS printers or hand delivered. Reports to other providers including hospital medical records with no fax number will be sent via US mail.

ALL UNEXPECTED RESULTS WILL BE CALLED TO THE PROVIDER
